There was a king names Karthaveeryarjuna, King of Mahishmati, son of Krutaveerya who was a strong devotee of Sri Dattatreya and blessed with his invincibility. He possessed the strength of a thousand arms on the battlefront. He had defeated Raavana at war and was reigning at Mahishmati, full of glory and arrogance.
Once King Karthaveeryarjuna went on hunting and was tired, thirsty and hungry and came to the Jamadagni Rushi’s ashrama. The sage Jamadagni arranged the entire troup of Karthaveeryarjuna, with a royal feast and felt very happy. The king enquired the sage as to how come you have prepared such a delicious food within a short period of time. Then the sage told him that he has Cow called Kamadhenu which can give anything we require and because of that only that he could give such a good food so quick. Karthaveeryarjuna demanded the cow, but the sage refused to give the Kamadhenu. Then the king ordered his solders to take away the cow by force. By that time, Parashurama who had gone out for collecting wood for Yagna, returned and got angry over the king, went to Mahishmati, where they had carried the cow and had a fierce fight with the solders, killed all the solders. Then came the King who had 1000 arms with the Anugraha of Dattatreya, and the two were engaged in a fierce battle, finally Parashurama killed the King alongwith his 1000 arms. He brought back the Kamadhenu. Jamadagni even though was happy with the return of Kamadhenu, asked Parashurama to go on a piligrimage tour for the parihaara of the sin for having killed so many people, which Parashurama accepted. While Parashurama was away, the sons of the King Karthaveeryarjuna, attacked Jamadagni Rushi’s ashram and killed Jamadagni, who was on a penace, in front of Renuka and Jamadagni was beheaded and took the head of the sage to Mahishmati. Parashurama, on his return was angry, he picked his Axe and marched towards Mahishmati. On reaching the city, he first butchered the guards at the main entrance. Breaking down the heavy gate, with his eyes like a couple of fireballs, he stalked to the palace like an enraged lion. There he destroyed the whole army, which came to attack him. He killed all the princes, picked up his father's head and returned to the ashram. There the children performed all the formalities in honor of the departed soul. Then Parashurama vowed : "All these kings are evil men. They stole the cow which had fed them; they killed my father and made my mother suffer widowhood. This entire kingly class should be destroyed. The pious cannot live in peace till then. Let me sharpen the axe. I am going to wipe out the whole lot of them.”
Carrying the axe on his shoulder, he toured the earth twenty-one times chopped off all the anogant Kshatriya, wiping out the entire royalty and distributed the entire kings’ properties to Brahmanaas as daana. He did not kill those kings who performed religious sacrifices ('yajnas') and kings like Janaka Maharaaja were thus saved; he did not kill marrying princes, and thus king Dasharatha and others were spared. He did not attack women. In fact, it is said that upon knowing that Parashurama would not harm women, some Kshatriya princes donned the robes of women and escaped amidst female groups. One such person came to be known a 'Nari-kavacha' (one who sought protection amidst women.) Parashurama kShetra

I think questioning and understanding the scriptures as per today's standards is unwise. Miracles , puranas, everything else are all part of maya. In maya there is nothing called possible or impossible. Anything is maya and maya is the tool of the Lord.So lets not be childish in saying that according to science this is not possible because science itself is not a complete one. It is a evolutionary subject. The end of the road for science would be ultimately the truth that is vedanta
Nice post. Though don't you

Nice post. Though don't you think the 1000 arms of kaartaveerarjuna is just a figure of speech for the amount of strength he might have possessed. It is a known fact that people who have realized their potential by Tapas have actually activated their minds and bodies beyond compare. So, don't you think the 1000 arms could be just a figure of speech rather than in the literal sense of it. Or may be there could have been a device attached to his body which could have had these 1000 arms. or this guy had to be a squid or an octopus mutated to have so many arms. no offense here, but this is what i can deduce when i think of it. could you please clarify it further, is my assumption a possibility?
Nice Approach

I also think, the reference to 1000 arms is an metaphor only. He might have developed power equal to 1000 arms.Because, any concept of Miracle is not possible. If it is observable than it is called science, and if it is not observable, or say observed than it is called Miracle. So every miracle must carry an unrevealed scientific knowledge with itself. This is what I think.
And to the cosmological interpretations, I think this may contain , or may not. As most of the cosmological and other scientific theories are presented in highly metaphors..which doesn't seem here. Comments of people will be helpful in exploring the reason behind this.

Thank you very much for providing we people with such flambuoyant information about Parshuram.
Though,I think, if we read the story from cosmological aspect , I think there can be some corollary fitted. I am still left with few questions :
1) What exactly, the King with 1000 arms suggests? If the reference of such king is given, there must be some reason for the same. I believe , there is no possibility of human being with such extra ordinary capabilities.? The author must be referring to some phenomenon with this texts.
Since Parshuram was Avtar of Vishnu, we can take approach of Cosmology, ( as there are other evidences of Vishnu fighting with Daityas for thousands of years, which are nothing but explantion of unknown cosmological phenomenon)
So perhaps here, the narration of king with thousand arms,is pointing to some phenomenon, perhaps cosmological phenomenon.
2) "Breaking down the heavy gate, with his eyes ", what does it conveys. Is it really possible for mankind to become this much powerful, or again it is pointing to some phenomenon. How come sages were able to develop such extra ordinary powers. We know they used to did the Samadhi for achieving the same, but question is how Samadhi makes one capable of all this.
thanks once again for useful information.

haraye namaha....
nice to get query about kaartaveeryaarjuna...and about his 1000 arms.. well letme clarify one thing.. as we know that there are 4 yugas and in every yuga the entire creation of paramatma is diffeent. technically we call it as a YUGADHARMA. similarly kaartaveeryarjuna though a humanbeing had 1000 arms because of his greatnature and in his past janma he pleased bhagavan by his penance and he got something exraordinary 1000 arms power..
I repeat, he getting 1000 arms later thought himself gr8 and started perishing entire world so to teach him the lesson lord parashurama destroyed his 1000 arms.. its clearly mentioned in MAHABHARATA and HARIVAMSHA puranam..
for your second question...
to attain salvatin those days sages were doing penance. there method of performing penance was something unimaginable. because 1st they use to have control over their 5 indriyaas..(senses)then mind ,manas , so if a person can takeover the control over manas he can achive anything and its simply called as Tapas...
therefore sages were mainly concentrating and feeling over their SHATCHAKRAS in their body and worshipping lord as Niyamaka. and finally when they used to reach the extent of Tapas there they were feeling the utmost nerve SUSHUMNAA which corelates to brain and controls entire form of a structure and through that they were coming out which is techically called as " BRAHMARANDHRA DWARA DEHATYAAGAHA " means , attaining moksha through brahmarandhra..
therefore, sages were deeply indulged to their mind which can mediate between humanmind to paramatma.. so this is the secret of their power..
if any doubts wil be clarified in detail further...
