DHARWAD: Even as there is opposition from a section of progressive writers to the government's move to establish Sanskrit university in Karnataka, progressive thinker and rebel writer Kum Veerabhadrappa called upon young writers to develop the habit of reading Sanskrit and ancient Kannada literature regularly so that they could produce valuable literature and strengthen Kannada further.

Inaugurating the two-day meet for young writers from Belgaum division, organized by Kannada Sahitya Parishat here on Friday, Veerabhadrappa said writers should try to reduce their real-life experiences in writing in order to make their literature effective. He also cautioned them against abusing the language. "You should know to write the language correctly and effectively," he told the budding writers.

Veteran journalist Patil Puttappa regretted that Kannadigas were still required to fight for the development and survival of Kannada even after formation of linguistic states. "The government should immediately take steps to overcome the shortage of Kannada teachers in colleges," he said.

Kannada Sahitya Parishat president Nallur Prasad said such meets helped cultural exchange. He stated that KSP would launch `Grama Siri', a programme to popularize literary activities in each village of the state.

Writer Siddalinga Pattanashetty, Dharwad District Sahitya Parishat president D M Hiremath, secretary Lingaraj Angadi, B V Gunjetti and Basavaraj Donur spoke.

Young writers from Dharwad, Belgaum, Bijapur, Bagalkot, Haveri and Gadag districts participated in the two-day meet.
