Can someone explain, what an Upanishad is? How is different from Vedas and other texts? What is the purpose of them?

The core foundation of Hindu belief is that Vedas contain source of all knowledge – physical or metaphysical. However in last 100 odd years, this belief has come under scrutiny due to the advances that modern science claims to make.

iam rajesh ,iam very much interested in ancient supernatural powers,iam also planning to do research in that kind of topic.i have heard that in vedas it is said about black magic.i want to know how far the black magic will work ,is it true or its just a pshycology matter.i want to know more information about that ,so anyone can suggest or can give soem information regarding this topic.

Recently when i was in India, I observed that the Television is being bombarded with shows of regression therapy. NDTV's "Raaz Pichle Janam ka" and on Kannada channels there are two shows running by Bala Krishna Swamiji a engineer turned yogi and ramachandra Swamiji a well known regression therapist. There was a discussion on one of the channels involving Bala Krishna Swamiji, a Buddhist Lama, a Neurologist, a social worker, and an atheist. The discussion's main topic was "is regression therapy a real deal?". The interesting part was, no one could prove it wasn't a real deal.
